Phantom Evil by Heather Graham

I really, really want to like this book.  Ghosts in New Orleans?  Right up my alley.  But OMG the writing is just not good.  The constant repetition, the way the characters say one thing then contradict themselves two sentences later and no one seems to notice, the sentences that don't actually say anything...it's driving me nuts!  And there's a bunch of filler that doesn't need to be in there.  The sex stuff can for sure go.  I know sex sells, but the relationship between Jackson and Angela seems forced and out of place. Minor point, but why does no one in this book have brown eyes?  80% of the population has brown eyes, yet none of Heather Graham's characters do.  It's especially weird because she's got people of all races--Native American, African American, Asian American, etc.--and none of them have brown eyes.   It's just statistically improbable.  I suppose all the characters are left-handed, too.  The girl is just o...

Normal People by Sally Rooney

I read this book because I saw an ad for the show on Hulu and it is supposedly the best book of the year and whatnot.  Major hype.  There was a wait list for it at the library.  I was very excited. I don't get it.  I mean, I understood the book.  It was a very simple book.  Two teenagers/early 20's kids have a slightly dysfunctional relationship.  The girl is being abused at home, both physically and emotionally, and all the adults in her life either don't know or don't care.  The boy is from a good home that people think is bad because his mom had him young.  He is way too wrapped up in what people think of him, which makes him act like a dick.  Normal stuff.  Which I guess was the point, because it's called "Normal People" but I just don't get what all the fuss was about.  Nothing at all happened in the book.  It wasn't a bad  book.  I read it all in one afternoon.  It wasn't tedious or particularly ...

The Good Neighbor by Amy Sue Nathan

This is the book that gave me the idea for the blog.  I enjoyed the book.  It was light, and fun, and mostly correct, although I did find a couple of typos.  Typos seem common in ebooks, much more so than print books.  I think they don't get proofed as well. Mrs. Feldman is indeed a very good neighbor.  She's always there for Izzy, and it's nice that Izzy gets a chance to return the support.  Mrs. Feldman's heartbreaking story just underscores how important it is to talk to each other, although I understand that may not have been the norm in the 1950s.  Makes me glad to be alive in the 21st century. I don't really get why everyone got SO upset about Mac.  If a friend of mine did what Izzy did, I would just laugh and hug her and tell her I was sorry she felt so insecure.  I certainly wouldn't get all pissed off over it.  As to the whole "she could have destroyed Jade's business" bit, we shouldn't discount that Jade brought the...
